Toyota’s new V-8 engine, previously only discussed in the context of supercars, now appears to have a wider application beyond high-performance vehicles. The company’s powertrain chief admitted in an interview with Australian media that it is technically feasible to fit the engine under the hood of the Land Cruiser (LC300). This V-8 engine, referred to as the “G20E,” may offer a modular design that allows for various vehicle applications, including the possibility of diesel and full hybrid configurations. While Toyota has not confirmed which models will adopt this new powertrain, the flexibility of the engine design suggests it could be used in a range of vehicles, including luxury models like the Century. The engine is reported to be a 4.0-liter twin-turbo unit that combines two 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines and is expected to deliver over 400 horsepower in its turbocharged four-cylinder form and up to 900 horsepower in the V-8 hybrid configuration. Toyota aims to achieve economies of scale by offering this powerful engine in vehicles beyond supercars, ensuring that the investment in its development pays off. Models like the Land Cruiser, Sequoia, Tundra, and Lexus GX or LX could potentially benefit from the V-8 powertrain, paving the way for more efficient, high-performance vehicles in the market without depending on plug-in hybrid systems. It remains to be seen how Toyota will implement this new engine technology in its lineup, but the potential for a more powerful, environmentally friendly fleet is certainly exciting.
