Tesla vs BYD: Siapa yang Mendominasi Pasar Mobil Listrik?

BYD mobile electric sales surpasses Tesla for the first time in more than a decade. Recent sales data revealed that Chinese giant BYD sold more electric cars than Tesla in 2025, marking the first time in over a decade that a competing car manufacturer has outperformed Elon Musk’s company. Tesla reported selling 1.64 million electric cars worldwide in 2025, a 9% decrease from the 1.79 million electric cars shipped in 2024. However, BYD narrowly exceeded by selling over 600,000 more cars, closing 2025 with 2.26 million electric cars sold.

Historically, BYD has outperformed Tesla in global car sales due to its production of plug-in hybrids, providing a broader appeal beyond its core EV base. But the 2025 sales results mark the first time, at least since the original Nissan Leaf era, that Tesla has been surpassed in pure electric car sales. Despite previous skepticism from Musk about BYD products, the Shenzhen-based company has been experiencing rapid growth in recent years, even though Americans have not seen it as their cars are not sold in the US.

Starting as a battery manufacturer for mobile phones, BYD has significantly expanded its range of electric and hybrid cars since the 2020s. The company has introduced new luxury brands like Yangwang and Denza, following guidelines similar to Lexus. Notably, BYD has achieved significant international expansion, surpassing Tesla in Europe for months and tailoring its offerings to local tastes with vehicles like plug-in hybrid estate wagons.

While Tesla openly admits its focus on autonomous Robotaxis rather than vehicle sales, BYD’s quick advancements have seen them establish a large international presence. Tesla’s lack of new models, especially problematic in China, the largest and most competitive electric car market, has hindered its sales. The company’s image closely tied to Musk, who faced increased controversy in 2025, has led to protests and boycotts against Tesla in North America and Europe.

Long-term comparisons between Tesla and BYD may not be wise – Tesla moving towards AI, robotics, and autonomy, while BYD seeks to be China’s Toyota or General Motors. With the capabilities to develop its autonomous vehicles and even driverless taxis, BYD poses a challenge to Tesla. However, one thing is clear: the electric car race is expanding beyond individual companies, as evidenced by these numbers. Please contact the author at [email protected].
