President Prabowo Subianto’s flagship programs, known as Free Nutritious Meals (Makan Bergizi Gratis/MBG), People’s School (Sekolah Rakyat), and Merah Putih Village/Urban Cooperatives (Koperasi Desa/Kelurahan Merah Putih/Kopdes), are likened to express lanes aiming to speed up the eradication of poverty. These initiatives are seen as potential job creators and enhancers of economic independence.
Head of the Poverty Eradication Acceleration Agency (BP Taskin), Budiman Sudjatmiko, emphasized that these programs are not just about reducing poverty but empowering people to be economically self-reliant. He explained the government’s strategy using a football analogy, where the poor are the players, and the government guides them towards skill development, intelligence, good nutrition, and economic opportunities to score the “goal” of poverty eradication.
Sekolah Rakyat, a boarding-based school program, aims to break the poverty cycle, while MBG and Kopdes Merah Putih are designed to bring economic benefits to entire communities. These programs are expected to create millions of jobs, benefiting not only the direct beneficiaries but also upstream sectors like farmers, SMEs, and village-owned enterprises.
Deputy Head of BP Taskin, Nanik S. Deyang, highlighted the tangible impact of these programs on poor households. For example, MBG’s large-scale operations have increased employment opportunities for local producers, while Kopdes helps in eliminating costly middlemen from supply chains. The cooperatives also provide access to affordable credit, freeing people from predatory lenders and offering financial support on more favorable terms than traditional banks.
Overall, these initiatives are viewed as integral parts of a comprehensive strategy to combat poverty, providing opportunities for economic growth, job creation, and empowerment of individuals and communities.
